Travel tips for saving your money (and your sanity) this holiday season

Holidays are supposed to be fun. And travel, believe it or not, is meant to be part of the experience.

To help save your money – and your sanity – here are some old and even a few brand-new holiday travel tips.

Use priceline.com’s Best Days To Fly holiday calendar

This year, the calendar is customize-able. Enter your departure and arrival cities and the calendar will show you day-by-day sample prices for your trip.

Fly on off-peak holiday travel days

For the lowest Thanksgiving fares and the best availability, try:
  • Departing Nov. 22, 24 or 25, and return on Nov. 27
  • Departing Nov. 21 and return Nov. 29 or 30

For the December holidays, consider:

  • Departing Dec. 22 and return Dec. 30 or 31
  • Departing Dec. 23 and return Dec. 31
  • Departing Dec. 24 and return Dec. 30 or 31
Pick times of day that are normally less busy

Time of day is important. You'll find the most affordable seats traveling early morning (5-7 a.m.) or late evening (after 8 p.m.). Mid-day (11 a.m. - 4 p.m.) is a bit more expensive, but still reasonable. Most expensive are the peak business travel hours of 8-10 a.m. and 5-7 p.m.

 Book early

USA Today recently reported that several major U.S. airlines have significantly trimmed their holiday period flights, so competition for seats will likely be keen this year.  Also, keep in mind that the most affordable tickets are usually those booked more than 21 days in advance of travel. Once you get inside 21 days or closer to takeoff, the cheap seats normally are gone and the expensive ones are all that's left.

Consider inter-line trips

An inter-line trip is where you depart on one airline and return on another.  Priceline's published-price airline ticketing service lets customers create customized inter-line itineraries.  During a time of fewer flights, choosing the inter-line route can make it easier to pull together a schedule that works for you.  It can also lead to a cheaper ticket.

Think Name Your Own Price

If the available published-price tickets include a connection, why not try Name Your Own Price and maybe save some money.  NYOP itineraries can depart anytime between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. and can include up to one connection of up to 3 hours.  But you can save up to 40% on a published-price ticket (or up to 60% if it's a last minute trip).  Check out priceline.com's Inside Track and you can get a general idea, in advance, of when the NYOP tickets for your desired trip depart, whether there's usually a connection, average connection times and - best of all - what offer prices are finding success for your trip.

Try using secondary nearby airports

It's often cheaper to fly through less-traveled airports. Instead of Los Angeles, try Long Beach; Ft. Lauderdale instead of Miami; Midway instead of O’Hare; Newark instead of Kennedy or LaGuardia.

Don't forget to check your flight status

Call the airline or check online before leaving for the airport to make sure flights are on-time and haven't changed.

Need a rental car or hotel room with that flight?

This can be the best gift of all for relatives.  Instead of making them drive to the airport, rent a car and save them the hassle.  And don't make them give up their bedrooms.  Stay in a nearby hotel and make it a stress-free holiday.

 Don't overpack

Rule of thumb is one carry-on per passenger. Checked bags will cost extra if they're over an airline's size limit.  If possible, mail or ship presents beforehand.  And don't wrap presents that will travel with you.  Even checked baggage is subject to being opened by security.

Bring proper identification

Make sure all family members have the identification they need for security and for the specific destination  (driver's license, birth certificates, passports, visas, etc.).

Arrive at the airport with time to spare

Even with fewer flights, airports will still be crowded and getting through security may take longer than normal.
