Business travel cutbacks may have silver lining for leisure travelers
Looking for an especially sweet deal on a vacation this year? May I suggest one of the nation’s big convention cities. Business travel is taking it on the chin. As for the cause, or causes, take your pick – a rotten economy, layoffs, media reports of lavish corporate events and the Treasury Department calling for bailout firms to adopt new policies for conferences and events. The New York Times reported this week that conference attendance could drop by 12 percent this year, with a 9 percent drop in off-site meetings and corporate events. PKF Hospitality Research said that, of the top 50 hotel markets it tracks, 40 will see a drop in occupied rooms for 2009. Business travel cutbacks could have a silver lining for leisure travelers. Cities that typically do a lot of business in corporate and convention travel – cities like Las Vegas, New York, New Orleans, Miami, San Francisco, Atlanta, Orlando, Dallas and Washington, DC – should be very attractive to leisure travelers, with consumer-friendly pricing on everything from vacation packages and hotel rooms, to theme park tickets, attractions and restaurants. I took a quick tour of Priceline and found quite a few especially good deals for the big convention cities.
