Plenty of deals for Valentines Day and Presidents DayBeing in the travel industry, I love this time of year. In January, people are still getting over the holidays and stressing out over credit card bills. Come February, it's time for Valentines Day, Presidents' Day, Spring Break - in short, it's travel time again. For every holiday, I produce a list of the top 50 travel destinations. This list is compiled from more than 30,000 Name Your Own Price hotel room booking requests made by our customers. These are people who want to travel, so I pay close attention to the results. This year's list of destinations for the combined Valentines Day/Presidents Day long weekend (February 14-16) brings good news for cities and tourist destinations hard hit by the economy. The Las Vegas Strip was #1 on the list, followed by New York's Times Square Theater District. (Did you happen to see the new ad where Mario Batali is wearing a sandwich board promoting the availability of tables at NYC restaurants? Talk about pulling out all the stops in a downturn). Florida took 13 spots on the list, including 5 for Miami neighborhoods. And hard-hit Hawaii was listed several times. Helping the travel turnout is the fact that Valentines Day falls on Saturday and Presidents Day is the following Monday, so there's your ready-made excuse for a romantic mini-getaway. Also doesn't hurt that almost every destination has low airfares and bargain hotel rates. How good are the deals for that weekend? How about $50 a night for a Name Your Own Price 3-star hotel in Scottsdale, $71 a night for a 3.5-star hotel on Fisherman’s Wharf, or $130 a night for a 3-star hotel on Key West. Airfares are attractive, too. I see $159 roundtrip airfares from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, $205 from Chicago to Boston, and $248 from Dallas to New York City. That’s including taxes and fees. Name Your Own Price rental cars for the weekend can be had for as little as $12 a day for a compact in Las Vegas, $12 a day for an economy car in San Diego, $13 for a compact in San Francisco and $15 for a full-size in Chicago. Travelers can save a bit more by purchasing an air & hotel package. My favorite for that weekend is $224 per person, including roundtrip airfare from Philadelphia to Las Vegas and 3 nights at The Stratosphere Hotel. Scottsdale is a good deal, too - $328 per person for roundtrip airfare from Seattle and 3 nights at the Scottsdale Plaza Resort. The perfect antidote for a freezing cold winter. Those are my recommended deals. To see the deals, go to www.priceline.com or www.priceline.com/pricebreakers/
